Indianapolis killings in April 2024

IndyStar is tracking each killing to better understand violence in the city. This list is preliminary, and the number of homicides can change as authorities investigate each case, determining whether the slaying was criminal, justified, accidental or suicide. IndyStar has excluded cases ruled accidents, suicides, fatal overdoses or hit-and-run deaths unless they were deemed intentional. This information is compiled using data from Indianapolis police, court records and interviews with family and friends of those killed. Shane Christian Coffman, 51, dies from injuries in carjacking at gas station on English Avenue

April 29: Shane Christian Coffman, 51, died from injuries suffered during a carjacking at a gas station on the southeast side of Indianapolis just before 3 p.m.

An officer patrolling in the area was flagged down and told someone needed help. The officer found Coffman outside the gas station, at 2701 English Ave., in the parking lot on the ground.

The officer provided aid until paramedics arrived. Coffman was transported to a hospital in critical condition but died after arriving.

He had trauma-related injuries, said officer William Young.

The officer at the scene put out a vehicle description of the car stolen during the carjacking. That vehicle was located by Speedway police and pulled over in the 1000 block of Holt Road, roughly 9 miles from the carjacking scene.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. Police identified the suspect as 33-year-old Chad Martin. He is jailed on murder and robbery charges.

About 2.5 hours after the deadly carjacking, the gas station was back open for business.

Robert Lewis Woods, 28, dies in shooting on Ralston Avenue

April 29, 2024: A man died days after a shooting on the north side of Indianapolis.

The shooting was reported about 10 p.m. April 26 in the 2800 block of Ralston Avenue. Responding officers found Robert Lewis Woods, 28, suffering from gunshot wounds.

He died from his injuries on Monday, police announced. Detectives are now investigating his death as a homicide.

Kevin Maurice Jackson, 50, killed on North High School Road suffered trauma

April 27: Indianapolis police were called just before 9 p.m. to the 3800 block of North High School Road about a person down.

Responding officers found 50-year-old Kevin Maurice Jackson suffering trauma-related injuries outside of a vehicle. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him deceased.

On Friday, May 3, Indianapolis police announced the arrest of 19-year-old Daryion Caldwell in the case.

Shanica Mills, 50, killed in shooting on Hovenweep Way

April 27: Indianapolis police were called to the 4300 block of Hovenweep Way just after 1 a.m. about a report of a person shot.

Officers found Shanica Mills, 50, inside a residence with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Timothy Dale Adkins, 62, fatally stabbed on Stephanie Lane

April 26: Indianapolis police were called to the 200 block of East Stephanie Lane just before 8 p.m. about a report of a person stabbed.

Officers found Timothy Dale Adkins, 62, outside an apartment building with trauma-related injuries. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Adkins dead at the scene.

Damon Wallace Jr. has been arrested in connection with the stabbing. He has been preliminarily charged with murder.

Ivionte Demar Campbell, 19, killed in triple shooting on Timbersedge Drive

April 25: A triple shooting on the northwest side of Indianapolis killed one male and injured two others.

The gunfire was reported about 10:15 a.m. in the 3400 block of Timbersedge Drive. Responding officers found three people, all males, with gunshot wounds. Their ages were not immediately available.

Medics pronounced Ivionte Demar Campbell, 19, dead at the scene. The two people injured were taken to hospitals. Police said one remained in critical condition and the other was in stable condition.

Police shortly after the shooting said investigators believe the case was an isolated shooting.

Christopher B. Brown, 47, killed in shooting on Hillside Avenue

April 22: A man was killed in a shooting in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood.

Indianapolis police officers were dispatched about 9:45 a.m. to the 2300 block of Hillside Avenue and found a man in the street suffering gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The coroner's office later identified him as 47-year-old Christopher Brown.

Police said detectives have identified a potential suspect, who an early investigation indicates knew the man killed. The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an argument.

On April 26 police announced the arrest of Frank Alexander, 29, in the case. Alexander was taken into custody a day earlier in the 4600 block of South Harding Street.

Michael Beck Jr., 38, and David Rogers, 43, dead in shooting on North Ritter Avenue

April 16: Two men are dead and a third injured in what police are investigating as a possible self-defense shooting.

Just before 1 a.m. officers were dispatched to the Rolland Manor Apartments in the 2100 block of North Ritter Drive near East 21st Street and found three men with gunshot injuries.

Michael Beck Jr., 38, and David Rogers, 43, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The third man was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Detectives believe no one else was involved in the shooting.

Bryan Matthew Rosa, 20, killed in shooting on Glenarm Drive

April 15: Bryan Matthew Rosa, 20, was shot and killed about 8:15 p.m. at an apartment complex on the city's northwest side.

Officers were called to 4500 block of Glenarm Drive in the Life of Woodsprings Apartments complex — near I-465 and West 46th Street — and found Rosa with gunshot wounds.

Rosa was taken to the hospital via ambulance but did not survive.

Detectives believe Rosa and his shooter knew one another.

On Thursday, Indianapolis police announced the arrest of 20-year-old Dewayne Randolph in the shooting.

Damon Maurice Anderson, 37, dies in shooting on Boulevard Place

April 14: Police responded about 11:15 p.m. to reports about a person shot in the 3700 block of Boulevard Place on the north side of the city.

Responding officers found 37-year-old Damon Maurice Anderson suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Indianapolis police later announced the arrest of Damon Anderson's brother, Datrone Anderson, in the shooting.

Docs: Man shot brother eight times during fight over living arrangements

Adesina David Aderinwoye, 53, killed in shooting on Indy's north side

April 13: Officers were called to the 500 block of East 42nd Street after a report of a person shot around 11:35 p.m. They found one man with gunshot injuries.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he died. He was later identified as 53-year-old Adesina David Aderinwoye.

2 shot: Keith Louis Ray, 16, dies on West 25th Street, second man critical

April 11: Two people were shot, one fatally, about 8 p.m. in the 400 block of West 25th Street.

Officers were dispatched to the area about a person shot and found Keith Louis Ray, 16, lying in the street with gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

A short time later, a man arrived at an area hospital with gunshot wounds. He was listed in critical condition and detectives believe the two shootings are connected.

Police provided no other details about the shootings in a news release.

Investigation underway after 2 people found shot on Graceland Avenue

April 10: About 7 p.m. police were called to the 3300 block of Graceland Avenue about a person shot.

Officers found two people at the scene with gunshot wounds. David Jesus Lopez, 46, was found inside a residence and died at the scene. A woman inside the residence also had gunshot injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A firearm was found at the residence and detectives are investigating the shooting as a possible murder-suicide.

Mother, boyfriend arrested in 5-year-old's death

April 9: A woman and her boyfriend were arrested in the death of her 5-year-old daughter after the child was found unresponsive in a home on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

Officers reported that Kinsleigh Welty appeared to be malnourished, and she was taken to Riley Hospital for Children, where she was pronounced dead.

The girl's mother, Toni McClure, 29, has been preliminarily charged with murder and child neglect resulting in death, IMPD said. Ryan Smith, 27, was also preliminarily charged with child neglect resulting in death.

Suspect sought in deadly shooting on East 38th Street that killed 21-year-old Mauro Quintero

April 9: Indianapolis police were called about a shooting at 1:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on the northeast side.

Responding officers found a man suffering a gunshot wound outside a vehicle in the 9100 block of East 38th Place in the parking lot of the complex.

The man, identified as 21-year-old Mauro Quintero, died at the scene.

Early stages of the investigation indicate Quintero was riding in a vehicle with the suspect, who was driving, when shots were fired.

The shooter ran south, prompting police to create a perimeter around 38th Street and North Post Road for about an hour as officers searched.

Police said the suspect has not been found as of late afternoon Tuesday, and are asking residents to use caution.

A description of the suspect was not immediately provided by police.

Daniel Sabalza, 20, killed in shooting on East New York Street

April 3: Around 8 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of East New York Street about a person shot and a personal injury crash.

Officers found Daniel Sabalza, 20, inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Jonathan D. Hill Jr., 31, dies in shooting on North Lasalle Street

April 3: About 6:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to the 800 block of North Lasalle Street near Michigan Road about a person shot.

Officers found Jonathan D. Hill Jr., 31, inside a residence with gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Police believe a disturbance happened inside the residence before the shooting but a suspect wasn't immediately identified or arrested.

Jaymion De'wan Beecher, 22, dies in shooting on East 38th Street

April 2: Shortly after 10 p.m. officers were dispatched to the city's east side about a person shot.

Officers found a man with gunshot injuries in the 9900 block of East 38th Street, near its intersection with North Mitthoefer Road.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he died soon after arriving.

Addam T. Hart, 25, dies days after shooting on Gable Drive

April 1: Just after 1 a.m. March 28 police were dispatched to a person shot on the city's east side.

Officers found Addam T. Hart, 25, with gunshot wounds in the 2200 block of Gable Drive, near the intersection of East 21st Street and North Mitthoefer Road.

Hart was admitted to an area hospital in critical condition.

On April 1, Hart was pronounced deceased after his organs were donated.

Police announced the arrest of 16-year-old Savannah Allen in connection with the killing about one month after Hart died. Allen was charged as an adult and is facing a murder charge.

Court docs: Shooters meant to kill someone else. They hit a man protecting his stepson

Dustin Wesley Soubeih, 39, killed in shooting on Kappes Street

April 1: Indianapolis police were called about 6 p.m. to a shooting in a west-side neighborhood.

Responding officers found a man outside suffering gunshot wounds in the 1300 block of Kappes Street. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. He was later identified as 39-year-old Dustin Wesley Soubeih.

Police said an early investigation led them to believe the shooting suspect was inside a nearby residence, which prompted them to call in a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit. The suspect was not found during a search of the residence a short time later on Monday night.

Early Tuesday, police arrested 63-year-old Jerry Fallen in the case.
