ISP: Man dead after exchanging gunfire with officers, deputies in Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. — A man is dead after exchanging gunfire with deputies and officers Thursday evening in Valparaiso, according to police.

According to Indiana State Police, Valparaiso Police Department and Porter County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to investigate a suspicious person displaying a handgun near the fairgrounds.

When officers arrived, they saw the man near the Butterfield Pavilion and then he ran towards Calumet Avenue, police said in a news release.

As the man ran, he shot at officers and deputies and they returned fire, police said. The man was shot, was taken to Northwest Health Hospital and later died.

The man has been identified as Caden Mura, 20, of Valparaiso, according to the Porter County Coroner’s Office.

Indiana State Police detectives are still investigating.
