Horseheads Community Animal Shelter to permanently close

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) — The Horseheads Community Animal Shelter has announced that it will permanently close its doors in three months.

According to a Facebook post made by the Horseheads Community Animal Shelter, it will cease operations on Monday, July 1. The post says that the shelter is closing partly because it cannot maintain a fully staffed board of directors and cannot continue to operate without a team to run the shelter and make decisions.

The staff thanked the community for supporting the shelter through volunteering, donating, fostering, adopting, and advocating for the animals. They also encouraged their supporters to continue giving to other animal shelters and rescues in the area.

The Horseheads Community Animal Shelter still has some cats and dogs available for adoption. Adoptable animals can be seen on the Petfinder website.

A volunteer group called “the Friends of the Horseheads Animal Shelter” opened the Horseheads Community Animal Shelter in 2016, according to the shelter’s website. The group had been supporting the Town of Horseheads’ animal shelter, which opened in 1972, since 2008 and took over when the town was no longer able to run it.
