Hornell’s Union Square Park receives public works award

HORNELL, N.Y. (WETM) — The City of Hornell’s Union Square Park and the agencies that worked on it were recognized with a public works award.

According to the City of Hornell, the Western New York branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) gave the 2023 Project of the Year Award to the Union Square Park project. The City of Hornell, LaBella Associates, and C.P. Ward Inc. were honored with this award from the structures less than $5 million category.

“We are thrilled with the completed Union Square Park project, and it’s great to see it recognized by the Western New York APWA branch,” said Hornell Mayor John Buckley. “We have a lot of great projects happening, and our successful collaborations with our consultants and contractors are instrumental in bringing these projects to life.”

The APWA created its Project of the Year Awards to recognize the collaboration between public management agencies, consultants/architects/engineers, and contractors who work together to complete public works projects. Winning projects are chosen based on criteria like safety considerations, inconvenience to the public, measures taken to protect the environment, use of sustainable materials, construction management techniques, and more.

Hornell broke ground on the Union Square Park project in April 2023 and finished the project in November 2023. Union Square Park was built thanks to Downtown Revitalization Initiative grants and was the first new park developed by the city in about 50 years.
