Yahoo Autos Honda Recalls 232,000 2018 Accord and 2019 Insight Sedans for Backup-Camera Problem
Honda is recalling 232,140 new Accord sedan and Insight hybrid models in the United States for buggy software that can disable the backup camera, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects every 2018 Accord sedan built through August 23, a total of 225,885 cars, and all 2019 Insight sedans built through August 22, which adds up to 6255 cars. When in reverse, the infotainment screen may go black or only show the parking guidance lines and not the actual image. No accidents or injuries have been reported to Honda. New cars on dealer lots should already be updated, since dealers received the new software earlier this month.
As of September 6, Honda said it had received at least 137 warranty claims and 11 reports from Honda field offices over the problem. Honda said it first discovered the problem in November 2017 and mistakenly identified it as a hardware fault. By July, Honda said, it confirmed it was software created by the head unit’s manufacturer, Panasonic.
Starting in November, dealers will plug a USB stick into the dash and update the infotainment software, which should also correct other issues such as the head-up display not showing the compass or turn-by-turn directions.
Also this month, Honda is recalling an additional one million cars to replace Takata passenger-side airbag inflators. In April, Honda recalled 5810 new Pilot and Acura MDX SUVs for bad rivets that may not secure the front seats to the floor. In 2017, Honda recalled more than 1.1 million Accord sedans and coupes from the previous generation for electrical shorts that could start fires under the hood.
The Insight is an all-new hybrid model, introduced for the 2019 model year and built on the same wheelbase as the Civic sedan. This is the first recall announced for the Insight.
