Homeless man wanted in southeast Fresno shooting, police say

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man described by police as a member of the unhoused community is wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in Fresno.

Officers say 41-year-old Robert Phompong is wanted following the shooting on April 8 on the 1500 Block of North Ninth Street in Fresno.

Officers say a ShotSpotter activation alerted them to the shooting that took place around 4:20 p.m. and they arrived to find 42-year-old Yong Vang suffering from a gunshot wound. Vang was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Phompong is known to Police to be a validated gang member with a criminal history according to Lieutenant Paul Cervantez of the Fresno Police Department.

“We don’t believe Mr. Phompong can make it very far,” said Cervantes during a press conference on Friday. “We believe that Mr. Phompong is a member of our unhoused community and we consider him to be armed and dangerous.”
