Here's how to file as a candidate in Columbia's Ward 1 special election
Ward 1 residents who want to fill the seat left vacant after Nick Knoth was recalled can file soon with the city as a candidate for the Aug. 6 special election.
Candidates must be Ward 1 residents and not already holding another public office.
Steps for filing
Collect at least 50 signatures on a candidate petition. Petitions, with instructions, now are available for pick-up 8 a.m. to noon and from 1-5 p.m. daily, except weekends and city holidays, from the city clerk's office.
File as a candidate with the city clerk's office starting 8 a.m. April 23. Filing deadline is by 5 p.m. June 4 to be added to the ballot.
The Ward 1 seat will remain empty until filled by the August election. The notice of the election will go in newspapers by Sunday and the city has until May 28 to issue a notice to Boone County Clerk Brianna Lennon about the special election.
The election filing timeline is so that candidates can appear on absentee ballots.
