FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Researchers at the University of South Alabama have identified a protein called TOMM 22 that could be a game changer in detecting pancreatic cancer sooner.

According to the National Cancer Institute, pancreatic cancer is often difficult to detect, this is because in most cases, there are no symptoms or the symptoms can mimic another illness.

The research is based on studying tissue samples from pancreatic cancer patients and experts say they are hopeful the protein will not only help with early detection but future treatments as well.

That number is three times higher than it was last year at this time. Because the virus is transmitted through mosquitoes, experts say the best way to stay protected is with mosquito repellent when outside in the early morning hours or early evenings during the warmer months.
