It was determined that a Ford Ranger driven by a 33-year-old San Bernardino man had been headed south on Central Avenue, while a Dodge Durango driven by a 47-year-old Phelan woman was headed south, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a written statement.

"For an unknown reason the Ford left the roadway causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle," according to the statement. "The Ford crossed into the northbound lane and crashed into the Dodge Durango."

The man at the wheel of the Ford Ranger was taken to a hospital, where he soon succumbed to his injuries, officials said. His identity was not released Wednesday morning.

The driver of the Dodge Durango was flown to a hospital by helicopter with major injuries, officials said. She was listed in stable condition.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team assumed control of the investigation.
