Hays County seeks funding for flood mitigation

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The Hays County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved on consent the application for more funding to make the county more flood resistant.

Hays County has had several severe flooding events that have caused extensive damage over the last decade. This includes a deadly flood along the Blanco River in 2015 that destroyed 321 homes and damaged an additional 376. It is estimated the flood cost an estimated $100 million in damages, according to KXAN reporting.

The County plans to apply for funds to develop a flood mitigation plan and a Drainage Master Plan that will identify areas to improve drainage conditions across the county, according to county documents.

With the funds, Hays County officials said they hope to be better prepared for the next severe flooding event and be in a better position to advise developers building in potentially risky areas.
