Harrowing Video Shows Moment U-Haul Truck Crashes Directly Into Pet Shelter

On March 27, a U-Haul truck crashed into the kennel area of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association and the shelter shared the harrowing footage from the perspective of the dogs at the rescue.

This video shows the moment the truck crashed into the building and shelter staff rushed onto the scene.

The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association posted on TikTok in part, "74 seconds. That’s how long it took for our team to realize what happened, where it happened, and get to the dogs. 74 seconds of pure terror, both for the dogs and the humans - thinking our sweet shelter dogs may be crushed beneath rubble. We are heart broken the animals had to go through the fear they felt that day.  You can tell how scared our team was (and in complete shock). But both inside & outside the building, our team ran towards the unknown to save the animals.  We are incredibly proud of the way our team jumped into action! We are still somewhat operational: bringing in strays case-by-case, handling fosters animals coming back, and coordinating new foster homes for pets at the shelter."

WCHSTV reports that the driver told investigators an accelerator in the vehicle got stuck leading up to the crash, according to Charleston police.

The building was heavily damaged in the incident. Firefighters helped construct scaffolding to keep the structure upright while the vehicle was moved.

The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association said it is now in dire need of fosters.

On Facebook people are supporting the shelter in the comments. One person posted, "Thank you all for your selfless service to those animals." Another added, "I already knew you all were the absolute best but this clip confirms that fact. I cried during this seeing the dogs panic and the staff moving to help despite their own fear! Love every one of you!"

How the Shelter is Recovering

150 dogs have been moved to foster care but the shelter is still looking for foster care for some of the dogs, and they supply all supplies needed.

The Kanawha County Commission has voted to approve $15,000 in an emergency  check to help the shelter rebuild but donations from the public are still being accepted.

The shelter has a wishlist of needed supplies here including dog food, cat food, cleaning supplies and animal crates.

If you are in the area and would like to foster a dog, volunteer or make a donation, you can visit the website for the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association here.
