Guilty plea entered in felony domestic assault case

Apr. 15—A Carl Junction man pleaded guilty Monday to a felony count of assaulting his wife.

Jason D. Curtin, 30, pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court to second-degree domestic assault in a plea agreement dropping related counts of first-degree domestic assault and resisting arrest.

Circuit Judge Dean Dankelson delayed formal acceptance or rejection of the plea deal and ordered the completion of a sentencing assessment of the defendant before a sentencing hearing June 20.

The charges stemmed from a domestic disturbance March 16, 2021, when officers answering a 911 call hang-up were met by Curtin at the door of the couple's residence and subsequently observed visible injuries to the wife's face.

She told police that he had come home in an intoxicated state and she had confronted him about it. She said he reacted by punching her in the face and about her head, striking her hard in the back of the neck and possibly chipping a tooth, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

He then pushed her up against a wall and was choking her before she broke free and tried to flee the residence. But he caught up to her and dragged her back inside to a bedroom closet where he "beat the crap" out of her, she told police.
