Greenbelt police searching for ‘senior skip day’ shooting suspect that injured 5

GREENBELT, Md. (DC News Now) — Investigators with the Greenbelt Police Department (GPD) are searching for the suspects in Friday’s ‘senior skip day’ shooting that injured five teenaged boys at Schrom Hills Park.

After more than three days later, police have yet to publicly release any photos or videos of the suspects or persons of interest in the case. Officers say two teens were still in the hospital recovering as of Monday at 4 p.m.

At the park Monday, city workers came to set up a new surveillance cameras there. The park’s pavilion was still taped off and closed for public use. GPD maintained a presence at the park for part of the day Monday.

Dave Bimbay told DC News Now that he witnessed the shooting and said it was unlike anything he has seen or heard before.

“I saw an officer pull up to the park, probably trying to break up all the kids here. As soon as another officer came for backup, that’s when the gunshots went off,” Bimbay said. “People went running left and right, left and right. It was a zoo. I was in my car and it was so busy I couldn’t get out.”

He says those shots sent hundreds of students into a frenzy, trying to duck and get away.

Students from multiple high schools are believed to have been there, according to police.

DC News Now reached out to Prince George’s County Public Schools for comment on what happened. The school system saying, in part, that it was “a senseless act of violence.” It also said additional security and crisis staff are at the impacted schools this week.

The school system did not clarify which schools were impacted. It also said it does not sanction “senior skip day” activities.

Greenbelt police was asking anyone with information, photos or videos from Friday’s shooting to come forward with tips to help with its investigation.
