GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Spring and summertime in Wisconsin usually also mean construction season and that is certainly the case at the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) as officials say they look to soon resume several improvement projects.

According to a release from GRB, multiple phased projects that started in 2023 are expected to resume and be completed by the end of the summer of 2024.

“Last year, GRB updated and improved its short-term parking lot and part of its long-term lot. This year, we’re moving into the final phase of the long-term parking update, which includes resurfacing, new security fencing, and new LED lighting. Additionally, the final phase of Runway 18/36 improvements will wrap up this summer.”

Marty Piette, A.A.E., Airport Director

The mentioned projects, along with two new projects, are said to be taking place as a way to enhance safety and improve the travel experience for those coming through GRB.

Officials say the first of the two new projects this year is replacing the sidewalk canopies that run along the front of the airport terminal. Said canopies will be removed and replaced with cantilevered canopies that will go over the ticketing and baggage claim entrances.

Piette adds that these new canopies will provide travelers with extra coverage as they walk in and out of the airport while also giving the airport exterior a fresh new look.

The second new project will be the electric work taking place out on the airfield. The plan is to install new LED lighting along the taxiways and runways which will consist of replacing 21 miles of conduit and cables.

In addition to the new LED lighting in the ground, GRB is said to also be replacing the rotating beacon, windsock, and various signage throughout the airfield as a way to provide more efficient and sustainable lighting.

“With all of the improvement projects taking place at GRB, our goal is to ensure we are providing a safe and enjoyable experience for travelers as well as the airlines and businesses serving the airport. The airport is a pivotal part of our community, with a significant economic impact. We are grateful to the community for their patience while the work takes place.”

Airport officials say the work is anticipated to be complete by the end of this summer and the $8.2 million project costs are being paid for through Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement (AIP) grant funds and Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics (WiBOA) state aid grants.
