Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday events in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Special masses and services will take place at several parishes in the region this weekend, announced the Diocese of San Diego.

“Today is Good Friday, the most solemn day in the Christian calendar,” stated diocese spokesperson Kevin C. Eckery in a news release Friday. “It commemorates the death and crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is observed with special prayer services and processions marking the day.”

Eckery explained that Holy Saturday will follow, just ahead of Easter Sunday. Here’s a list of events taking place across the region this weekend, according to the Diocese of San Diego:

Events on Good Friday

  • The 31st Annual “Walk for the Suffering,” an ecumenical event, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will begin and end at the San Diego Rescue Mission, which is located at 120 Elm St. in San Diego.

  • The “Pro-Life Stations of the Cross” will take place at St. Joseph Cathedral, which is located at 1535 Third Ave. in downtown San Diego. Participants will gather starting at 11:45 a.m. and march from the Cathedral to the Federal Building at Front Street and Broadway, and re-enact the Stations of the Cross at the Federal Building before processing back to the Cathedral.

Events on Holy Saturday

  • Cardinal Robert McElroy will celebrate Easter Vigil Mass Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Good Shepherd Parish, which is located at 8200 Gold Coast Dr. in Mira Mesa.

  • Auxiliary Bishop Ramon Bejarano will celebrate Easter Vigil Mass Saturday night at 8 p.m. at St. Therese of Carmel Parish, which is located at 4355 Del Mar Trails Rd. in Del Mar Heights.

Events on Easter Sunday

  • Auxiliary Bishop Felipe Pulido will celebrate Easter Mass at St. Therese Parish at 10:30 a.m.  St. Therese is located at 6400 Saint Therese Way in San Diego.

  • Auxiliary Bishop Michael Pham will celebrate two Masses on Easter. The first will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Chula Vista at 11 a.m., which is located at 345 Anita St. in Chula Vista.

  • The second will be at Holy Family San Diego at 2 p.m. The church is located at 1957 Coolidge St. in San Diego.
