BBC One gameshow Gladiators is officially getting a celebrity special.

Hosted by father-and-son team Bradley and Barney Walsh, this year's revival series went down a treat with viewers, and a reported 9.8 million pairs of eyes tuned in for the opening episode over a 28-day period (via MailOnline).

Executive producer and managing director of Hungry Bear Media, Dan Baldwin, announced on BBC Radio 4: "I can reveal we are going to do a celebrity special.

"You always look at old shows that are no longer on television. You are always coming up with new ways of bringing back a show. It's no exaggeration to say that the response to Gladiators has been phenomenal."

Baldwin, who is married to Holly Willoughby, continued: "The episodes have been packed with nail-biting drama, thrilling action and huge emotion. Series 2 will see the show go from strength-to-strength. We have some amazing surprises in store for the fans."

Also weighing in on the success of the reboot was BBC's head of entertainment Kalpna Patel-Knight.

"Gladiators has really kicked this year off with a bang, and we're so delighted that the fans have come to the show in their masses. It has been wonderful to hear how much families have loved watching this together, as part of the BBC's Saturday evening entertainment offering," she said.

The BBC declined to comment further on the celebrity special.
