Geneva school board approves new curriculum

Apr. 27—GENEVA — The Geneva Area City Schools Board of Education approved the purchase of new curriculum for English language arts and science.

Substitute Superintendent David Riley said the ELA and science committees really did their homework.

He said he continued to check with teachers to make sure they were sure about the curriculum that was being chosen, and to make sure they were requesting everything they need.

"We talked quite extensively about professional development opportunities that the companies were offering," Riley said.

The goal is to get the curriculum into teachers' hands before the summer break in order to give them time to plan.

Board member Michele Krieg asked about when new curriculum will be adopted for grades K-6.

Riley said the district is planning to adopt K-5 math and 6-12 social studies curriculum next year.

"Looking with the administrative team, we may move K-5 ELA up," he said.

The district's ELA curriculum subscription ends at the end of next year, which makes the timing good to find a new one.

Krieg said she is not sure the state will continue to include that curriculum in the accepted list next year.

"I think they're allowing a lot because of the cycle in which we purchase textbook series for districts, and the cost," she said. "They're appreciating that this year, but I think it's going to be a much different twist next year."

In other business:

—Riley said the district is in the middle of state testing.

He said there are a lot of moving parts involved.

—Board President Marti Milliken Dixon said the district's search for a new treasurer is ongoing.

Current Treasurer Kevin Lillie will be retiring later this year.
