Fresno County Animal Shelter needs your help

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Fresno County is asking for the public’s help after the Fresno County Animal Shelter announced on Wednesday that it is currently over capacity.

The animal shelter, operated by Fresno Humane Animal Services (FHAS), due to a surge in animal intakes, space limitations only allow room for sick, injured, aggressive (danger to the public), and orphaned nursing animals. Healthy animals cannot be accepted until further notice.

Officials say the best ways the community can help are:

  • Adopt a Pet: Open your heart and home to a deserving animal by adopting. This directly reduces shelter overpopulation and saves a life.

  • Become a Foster Parent: Provide temporary, loving care for animals as a foster parent, allowing FHAS to help more pets.

  • Help Reunite Lost Pets: Share information and stay alert for missing animals to expedite their safe return home.

  • Connect with Local Animal Rescue Groups: Rescues can promote, take in, or provide temporary assistance for individuals to shelter an animal.

  • Hold Animals on Your Property: FHAS can assist with providing leashes, vaccinations, food,
and medication with the assistance for individuals willing to temporarily shelter an animal on their property. If nursing, FHAS can even provide formula or assistance as needed.

  • Use Social Media: Typically, if a lost animal is left alone, they are within a one-mile radius of home and have a better outcome for reunification. The current recommendation for healthy dogs is for the public to take photos and post them on social platforms without taking the dog.

FHAS says despite the influx of animals, they are still operational— meaning services like adoptions, fostering opportunities, microchipping, rescue partnerships, and animal control field services are still available.

  • In-Person Protocols: Remain in your vehicle and call FHAS for instructions upon arrival. Follow posted signage for a smooth experience.

  • Community Resources: FHAS can connect community members with resources for temporary pet housing
