Free hand surgery offered to those in need in El Paso County

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Surgery can often fix or improve injuries and ailments but for those unable to afford care, relief may not be an option. However, three local doctors are hoping to improve lives by offering free surgeries.

The El Paso County Touching Hands Project offers free hand surgeries to El Paso County residents who do not have active insurance coverage or who have Colorado Medicaid.

Dr. Jeffry Watson, an orthopedic surgeon with the Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group (CSOG) is one of those doctors and he said their effort is part of a larger effort by physicians across the U.S. to provide care to those in undeveloped countries and to their own neighbors.

“They had a lot of successful missions overseas and continue to do so, but we realized there’s a very large need in our own backyard,” Watson said.

The deadline to register is May 17 and surgery will occur on Saturday, June 1. Conditions to the hands, wrists, fingers, or elbows will be considered. Questions can be emailed to info@csog.net and more information about the project can be found at epctouchinghandsproject.org.
