SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4) — Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Season 2 is out today on Apple TV+, and our film critic Patrick Beatty was able to discuss the new season with executive producers John Tartaglia, Halle Stanford, and Matt Fusfeld about what their goals were for the new stories, what parents had asked to be featured in this season, and the magic of Jim Henson’s muppets.

Upon being asked about what approach the show wanted to take with the new season, Tartaglia said, “Well, I think that we saw in the reaction to the first season, the love that the people who grew up with the original series had and the new families that were discovering it and we were like, ‘Okay, our job is to do two things: One is to make the second season even more epic, even more exciting, even more full of the Fraggle magic that we all know and love, and then the second part is really to address these two big issues — that when we reached out to families to find out what they were concerned about, which were climate change and food insecurity, to make sure that we really address them, as we’ve been saying in a very fun, Fraggly, silly way that makes it accessible to everybody.”

Beatty asked Halle Stanford why she believes Jim Henson’s creations have endured all these years.

Stanford replied, “I think it’s the joy, the playfulness of Fraggle Rock. We’ve kept the same DNA that Jim Henson inspired in the beginning, but I just think it’s so funny, and I think we all want to believe in the magic. I know as a little girl, I wanted to believe that behind that hole in the wall, I could go down and find this magical world of frogs. And I still wish for that at age 54. So I think that that’s the endurance and just really, really strong, beautiful characters that you just want to play with every day.”

This season is bringing many guest stars to play alongside the Fraggles.

When asked what were some of his favorites, Matt Fusfeld said, “Man, there’s so much good music this season. I mean, Adam Lambert does a duet with Doc up in her workshop, and it’s a reimagining of this legacy song that Harvey Mason Jr. and his team re-orchestrated. That’s such a good song. The K-Pop band aespa. We went to Seoul and did Uncle Traveling. Matt did a music video with them. Ariana Debose plays this great character, Mezzo, who’s this sort of pop star in Fraggle Rock. Brett Goldstein, Catherine O’Hara. They do a couple of songs too. It’s just a stellar season of music, in general.”
