Fourth suspect connected to child's shooting death in Athens nabbed in Brooklyn

An alleged street gang member wanted for the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old boy in Athens was arrested Friday in Brooklyn, New York, Athens-Clarke police announced.

Dakious Echols was the fourth suspect charged in the shooting death of Kyron Zarco-Smith, who was killed when gunmen fired bullets at his home. The child was seated on a sofa when police said he was hit in the chest by one of the bullets that pierced the wall of the mobile home.

The shooting occurred March 8 in Hallmark Mobile Home Park along Spring Valley Road in east Athens.

Two suspects, Jayden Brown, 16, of Athens, and Julian Cubillos,17, of Lawrenceville, were arrested soon after the slaying.

A manhunt then began for the other two suspects, 18-year-old Echols and Desmontrez Mathis, 22, of Athens. Mathis was arrested May 2 in Augusta.

Police did not disclose how Echols was tracked to a location in New York.

All four suspects are charged with felony and malice murder, four counts of aggravated assault and violating the state’s street gang law.

Echols is also charged in federal court with unlawful flight. Police said Echols remains in New York pending an extradition hearing.
