Foundation creates new scholarships for medical assistants

Apr. 24—HIGH POINT — Bethany Medical and the Lenny Peters Foundation created a new scholarship fund for students in medical assistant programs at five community colleges in the region and gave out $27,000 for the first year.

On Tuesday, 13 students from Guilford Technical Community College, Randolph Community College, Davidson-Davie Community College and ECPI, along with representatives of those colleges, were invited to Dr. Lenny Peters' house in High Point for the inaugural Bethany Medical Scholarship Luncheon.

Elise Peters Carey, president of Bethany Medical, said the new scholarship fund reflects two of the company's core values: belief in the importance of education, and belief in the importance of creating jobs and opportunities to give back to the local community.

Each student received $1,000, and each of the schools received $2,000.

Last week, the foundation gave $1,000 to each of four scholarship recipients from Forsyth Tech and $2,000 to that college.

John Joyce, a spokesman for Bethany Medical, said that one important goal is to try to help ensure there is a steady pipeline of medical assistants in the Triad to supply Bethany Medical and other medical offices.

Toward that goal, Bethany's recruiting staff was part of Tuesday's event, and Director of Recruiting Greg Denny treated the scholarship recipients like rock stars and promised that they and the Bethany Medical staff would all get to know one another.
