Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “should resign” for his handling of the Israel-Hamas war and for relations with Palestine.

“He has been an obstacle to the two-state solution,” the California Democrat said in an interview with RTÉ News. “He's been a problem.”

“We reject the policy and the practice of Netanyahu. Terrible. What could be worse than what he has done in response?” she added. “I don't know whether he's afraid of peace, incapable of peace, or just doesn't want peace.”

Pelosi’s comments come a month after her former congressional leader colleague Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Netanyahu had “lost his way” amid the Israeli strikes on Gaza that has led to a humanitarian crisis for civilians, and called for new elections in Israel to replace Netanyahu’s war coalition. Schumer insisted that the United States didn’t want to dictate who should lead Israel, but he said new elections were necessary “at a time when so many Israelis have lost their confidence in the vision and direction of their government.”
