HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — When Larry Hogan stepped down a governor of Maryland there was talk he would have his eye on the White House next.

But as filing deadline closed in, Hogan tossed his hat into the ring for the U.S. Senate as incumbent Democrat Ben Cardin retires.

Poll: Hogan tops, ties top Democrats for Maryland’s open US Senate seat

Hogan took the weekend to tour western Maryland counties. As the former governor, he was co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission, which includes that region of the state. He said western Maryland is a great part of the state.

“Western Maryland has always been important to me,” Hogan said. “The people here are often, sometimes, neglected and forgotten and we want to make sure that, like I did for governor for eight years, we’re going to pay a lot of attention to this area.”

Polls in the Democratic primary for Cardin’s seat show a tight race between Sixth District Congressman David Trone and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobroooks. Trone’s congressional district takes in all the western Maryland counties.

Maryland’s primary election will be on Tuesday, May 14.
