Ford Announces Return of Two Icons at Detroit Auto Show: Ranger and Bronco
This week, Ford generated news at the press previews for the 2017 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with the announced return to the North American market of its iconic Ranger midsize pickup in 2019, with a new Bronco midsize SUV to arrive in 2020. Both trucks will be built at Ford’s assembly plant in Wayne, MI, the automaker said.
Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of The Americas, told media at the show that customers have consistently asked for a generation of trucks that are capable yet fun to drive. “Ranger is for truck buyers who want an affordable, functional, rugged and maneuverable pickup that’s Built Ford Tough. Bronco will be a no-compromise, midsize 4x4 utility for thrill seekers who want to venture way beyond the city,” he said in a statement.
Production of the new Ranger, which was discontinued in the U.S. market in 2011 but has been produced in newer versions in many worldwide markets, will begin in 2018.
Midsize pickups sold like gangbusters (up double-digits on a percentage basis) last year with a boost from the new Honda Ridgeline, Toyota’s latest Tacoma, and GM’s newer midsize pickups: Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
The Bronco, which was first produced in 1966 and was deleted from Ford’s truck and SUV lineup in 1996, will again be produced at the Wayne, MI, plant, although no production timeline was revealed.
