Fonde Elementary teacher credits her role model for becoming a teacher

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Tamara Smith says she always wanted to be a teacher — and it’s because of one particular person in her life when she was in second grade.

“Her name is Ms. Pringen at Geeter Primary School in Opelika, Alabama. She was just so bright and fun every day — you never saw her frown, ever, so I just wanted to be that teacher,” said Smith.

And indeed she is that teacher. Just ask her students.

“I love her and she’s the best,” said one of her kindergartners.

Or her Mom.

“I’m so proud of her. This is her dream and I’m so proud.”

Smith has been a teacher for five years. But she says others get the credit for where she’s at today.

Tamara Smith says she always wanted to be a teacher after her role model.

“I’m so excited.  I’m just really thankful for my co-workers and my kids and my Mom for always supporting my dreams — and anything I want to do at Fonde they’re like, ok, let’s see how we can do it. So, I’m excited,” she said.

And while she has lots of guidance for her students, there is one piece of advice she gives each student every day.

“That you come to school and you be the best you are no matter what. Like, don’t think about what other people say about you, you know who you are, so you have to be the best you are,” said Smith.
