Foley camper fire kills man, dog — cause under investigation

FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — The Foley Fire Department is investigating a Sunday morning camper blaze that reportedly killed a man and a dog.

Foley Fire and Police Department units were dispatched to a reported camper fire at 303 W. Magnolia Ave. on Sunday, March 17, at 12:16 a.m. (Editor’s Note: The Foley Fire Department just released this information today.)

When they arrived, units found a 32-foot travel-trailer camper behind the home at the fire’s location and were told someone was trapped inside, according to an FFD news release.

Fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze and searched for victims; one camper occupant escaped the fire without injury, according to the release.

Crews found a man, identified as Dallas Omega Martin, 52, of Foley, dead with severe burns. Preliminary autopsy results indicated he died as a result of the fire, according to the fire department.

They also found a small dog dead, also “likely as a result of the fire,” the release said.

The Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office and the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office were requested to visit the scene and responded to investigate with Foley police and fire crews.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the cause of the fire is undetermined “due to the extensive damage to the camper and no first-hand knowledge of the fire origin, officials said.
