Florida principal put student in chokehold, struck his head with charging cord: reports

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida principal was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly trapped a child in a room for nearly an hour, and caused multiple injuries, according to reports.

Dontay Akeem Prophet, 33, was charged with aggravated child abuse and false imprisonment of a child under 13 years old, an arrested affidavit obtained by WESH showed. He was arrested on Saturday.

Marion County Deputies were called to the Destiny Leadership Academy last Friday after getting a call about a physical disturbance between Prophet and a student, WESH reported.

After reviewing surveillance footage, deputies found “multiple examples” of the principal hurting the student.

According to WESH, the video showed the principal approaching the child at a table and “poking” and “grabbing” him. When the child fell on the ground, Prophet reportedly sat on top of the boy, then grabbed him off the floor and put him in a “choke hold.”

Throughout the whole interaction, the principal continually blocked the door to prevent the child from leaving, documents show.

At one point, when the child was under the table, the 33-year-old “attempted to drag him out by his ankles, then started twisting one of them,” WESH said. Deputies said Prophet also slapped the child in the face and struck him on the side of the head with a charging cord.

Arrest affidavits also reportedly show that other teachers witnessed the incident

However, when deputies confronted Prophet about the incident, he claimed that the altercation was an “attempt to protect the child,” according to WESH.

The principal was arrested the next day and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
