Five arrested in shooting that left Montgomery woman paralyzed

Montgomery police have arrested four more men in connection with a shooting that left a Montgomery woman paralyzed, bringing the total number of arrests to five in the case. All of those arrested are from Prattville or Millbrook, police said.

The shooting has raised concerns about safety among many residents in Montgomery due to its apparent random nature. The victim, Amy Dicks, 43, was in a vehicle sitting at a red light on Atlanta Highway when she was shot. Police describe her as an “innocent bystander” who does not know the men charged in the case.

The investigation continues and more charges and arrests are possible, Acting Police Chief John Hall said in a Tuesday afternoon City Hall news conference about the investigation.

Those who have been arrested are:

  • Javarius Anderson, 22, of Prattville, charged with two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and assault. He was in the Montgomery County Detention Facility Tuesday afternoon under bonds totaling $90,000.

  • Je’Kwon Foster, 20, of Prattville charged with discharging a firearm into an unoccupied vehicle. He was in the detention facility Tuesday afternoon under a bond of $15,000.

  • Ji’Mecya Ford, 19, of Prattville, charged with discharging a firearm into an unoccupied vehicle. He was in the detention facility Tuesday afternoon under a bond of $15,000.

  • Tyrone Davis Jr., 18, of Millbrook, charged with discharging a firearm into an unoccupied vehicle. He was in the detention facility Tuesday afternoon under a bond of $15,000.

  • Michael Johnson, 20, of Prattville, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and assault. He is out of the detention facility after posting bonds totaling $90,000.

Anderson, Foster, Ford and Davis were arrested Tuesday with the help of the United States Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force.

At about 1 p.m. April 12, Dicks was sitting in a vehicle that was stopped at a red light in the 5500 block of Atlanta Highway, police reports show and her family members say. She was struck by a bullet and left paralyzed, her mother, Freida Owens said when she addressed a recent Montgomery City Council meeting.

Those charged were traveling in two vehicles with occupants of both vehicles allegedly shooting at the other vehicle, Hall said. An “extensive” investigation has led to the arrests, said Maj. Saba Coleman, spokeswoman for the Montgomery Police Department.

The fact that the suspects were not Montgomery residents complicated the investigation in its early stages, Hall said. Traffic cameras in the area of Atlanta Highway aided the investigation, he said.

“A group of individuals committed a heinous act,” Hall said, and Dicks “… got caught in the middle.”

Hall also praised the public for information they relayed to law enforcement and area law enforcement agencies that assisted in the investigation.

“Without the help of the public we would not have been able to crack this case,” he said. “We were able to develop leads, take those leads and develop evidence and ultimately secure warrants in this case.”
