A fire at the former Nevele Grand Hotel is under investigation: What we know so far

WAWARSING - A fire that destroyed a building on the site of the former Nevele Grand Hotel Tuesday night is under investigation.

Everett Erichsen, Ulster County's director of emergency services, said the fire was in the winter lodge.

The fire was reported at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters from multiple departments in Ulster and Sullivan counties were on the scene until 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Erichsen said no cause has been identified yet, but the fire is not being labeled as suspicious at this time.

The Nevele was one of many hotels in the so-called Borscht Belt that for decades drew thousands of visitors to the Catskill region.

The hotel opened in 1901 and has been closed since 2009. It was among the local sites under consideration when the state awarded four casino licenses about a decade ago. Resorts World Catskills in Monticello was chosen instead.

It was subsequently proposed as a site for a $150 million sports complex, but that never materialized.

More recently, there have been reports that a new owner plans to work with a New York City-based developer to demolish the current buildings and build a new hotel and related attractions on the site. The developer could not immediately be reached for comment.
