Fight to keep Orchard Mesa Community Pool open continues

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The fight to keep the Orchard Mesa Community Pool open is looking more and more bleak.

WesternSlopeNow spoke with Mariann Taigman, who has been rallying to save the pool for over four years.

“We have worked very hard as a committee, tirelessly, to bridge the gap between the county and the district and the city for four long years. Our committee is working to find more revenue resources outside of tax dollars to support this.”

At a Mesa County Commissioners meeting, commissioners voted to approve a transfer of $800,000 to District 51 to keep the pool open and to give D51 more time to decide what to do with the building.

“I think it’s important for us to transfer these funds to District 51 as soon as possible,” says Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland. “We’ve already seen the cost of demolition went up half a million dollars from $900,000 to $1.4 million. I think it’s then up to them if they want to keep it open until the new rec center opens. But that could mean another half a million or more in the cost of demolition. So I think it’s good for us to give them the funds and let them decide.”
