Erie police investigate shooting during reported armed confrontation that wounded man

Erie police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting on Monday afternoon that wounded a 37-year-old man on the city's west side.

The shooting was reported on Monday at about 3:50 p.m., when city police officers were sent to the 600 block of Raspberry Street on a report of shots fired. Officers who arrived on scene encountered a male holding a gun in his hand who was standing over another man who was down on the sidewalk, Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said Tuesday morning.

The man with the gun told police the other man had a knife, and the man who was on the ground told officers the other man shot him, Lorah said.

The man on the ground had gunshot wounds to his stomach and leg and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The 24-year-old man with the gun dropped the weapon when ordered to by officers, and he was taken into custody and later released, Lorah said.
