Egg prices cool slightly from Easter 2023

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Spots hosting Easter egg hunts are expecting big crowds this weekend given the Kansas City metro’s beautiful forecast.

And while the weather is heating up, another integral Easter item has cooled from a price perspective, but only slightly.

There’s not as much shell-shock on egg prices compared to last year, but the average price nationally for a carton of large eggs is still near historic highs.

According to statistics from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, in February the U.S. city average price for a dozen large Grade A eggs was $2.99.

The price is down from $4.21 last year, but still a lot higher than the $1.59 people were paying in 2021.

Families, however, are hungry for Easter experiences with festivities starting on Friday at Faulkner’s Ranch with hundreds of kids tracking down plastic eggs – the obvious candy container for this sort of event.

Still, egg dying at home isn’t out of the equation.

“We’re going to do that tomorrow,” Leanna Brockman said as her young son opened eggs.

“How do you think that’s going to go?” FOX4’s Jacob Kittilstad asked.

“It’s going to be a mess,” she said.

“Last year was expensive, but fortunately my mom buys their eggs. And they color at her house,” said another mom.

Families say they’ve coped in different ways, like relying on a neighbor chickens.

“I was buying fresh eggs. So, that’s how I got through the egg crisis of last year,” one dad, out at the Easter egg hunt, said.

“I lived in California before this and they were even more expensive” Kallie Flexman, also at the egg hunt, said.

“I usually get the fake eggs and dye those because then that’s a little easier,” she said.

The egg hunts at Faulkner’s Ranch were packed on Friday – having multiple hunts at Noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm. Organizers are planning to do the same on Saturday – anticipating potentially even larger crowds.
