Edison to hear plans for 8 single family homes on former Charlie Brown's site

EDISON - Plans to build eight single-family homes on the former site of the Charlie Brown's restaurant on Plainfield Road will come before the township Planning Board this month after a three-year battle over the development of the property.

A special Planning Board meeting has been scheduled for April 15 to hear The Links at Edison LLC's application for 222 Plainfield Road.

The developer has already presented plans for preliminary and final subdivision approval for eight lots and eight single-family homes to the Board's Technical Review Committee.

Previously the developer had plans to build townhomes and duplexes on the property next to the Metuchen Golf & Country Club, but neighborhood residents objected to the developments.

The hearing on the application comes after the Township Council in January unanimously approved an ordinance to rezone the 2-acre site as an R-C zone and established a single-family residential development as a permitted use within the zone.

The ordinance was enacted as part of a litigation settlement with the developer.

Under the settlement, Markim Developers, parent company of The Links at Edison LLC, can subdivide the property into eight lots with a single-family home on each lot in the project called The Links at Edison.

Previously Markim had proposed developing 23 townhomes on the property, and later revised the plan to construct 14 age-restricted duplex homes which was approved by the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

A resident then appealed the board's approval to the Township Council which overruled the board's approval in October 2022.

Markim Developers then went to court to overturn the council's ruling before the settlement was reached.
