Edison H.S. students volunteer day of community service

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — More than 275 students from Thomas A. Edison High School got out of the classroom for their annual Community Service Day event. The students volunteered at more than twenty non-profit organizations around Elmira and Elmira Heights.

Some students volunteered at Meals on Wheels of Chemung County to plant seeds in its garden and help them grow vegetables for meals.

“The food that we’re growing would be just for people who want to come and get the food for themselves and it’s just a community garden,” said sophomore Abigail Johnson. “It’s really fun because I got to hang out with friends and some people I’ve seen around school but haven’t associated with and they’re really nice.”

Near Meals on Wheels, other students participated in activities at the Community Arts of Elmira planting flowers and organizing fabric to prepare for sewing classes in the future.

Freshman Haleigh Rodriguez said, “We planted the flowers and when we went inside, we folded the fabric just to help people, so that way they don’t have to do it and they can just get right into their work.”

Another student Sabou Diakite added, “Making our community look better. It’s kind of look more tourism. Gets the community more interactive with what’s around them.”

What the students appreciated was the lessons learned from volunteering and helping the community.

“I think it’s a really good lesson that as students and as people of the community, we need to give back to our community and all of the stuff that we’re doing today is a great way to give back and just help support the community and bring us closer together as a tighter knit group,” said student Will Timofeeff.
