What is the ecological benefit of bluebonnets, other Texas wildflowers?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The beauty of Texas is enhanced every spring when the wildflowers bloom. It was nice to see the Lupinus Texensis come a little early this year, even before the spring season started.

Lupinus Texensis? If you have lived in Texas for any amount of time you do know what they are. They’re the Texas Bluebonnets.

Rich Segal spoke with Hanna Cofer, the Interim Chief Executive Office of the Trail Conservancy. This organization’s mission is to be stewards of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail for the benefit of all who use the trail. In was founded in 2003 as the Town Lake Trail Foundation.

She shared her knowledge about when the other wildflowers will bloom, including some Scarlett and Cedar Sage. Where we see these two flowers is also a place that attracts Hummingbirds.

The wildflowers provide a huge ecological benefit. They are important for pollinators, insects, and wildlife which ultimately contribute to a healthy biodiverse ecosystem. They can benefit soil health, prevent erosion and improve live conditions.

Hanna also shared her favorite places to view the color the wildflowers provide.

The Trail Conservancy is always looking for volunteers to assist in their efforts of keeping our trails clean… and colorful.
