Eclipse forecast is cloudy in Washington County, Md., Franklin County, Pa.

The weather along the Mason-Dixon Line wasn’t looking ideal for Monday’s solar eclipse as of Thursday afternoon.

Mainly cloudy skies are in the forecast for Washington County, Md., and Franklin County, Pa., according to National Weather Service meteorologists.

“It’s not going to be an exceptional day,” said John Banhoff in State College, Pa. There won’t be dense cloud cover, but it won’t be crystal clear either, he explained.

There is a 70% chance of cloud cover in the Hagerstown area, with temperatures around 60 degrees when the solar eclipse peaks around 3:15 p.m. Monday, according to his colleague Kevin Witt in the NWS Baltimore/Washington forecast office.

“I wish I could say clear skies and mild, but I can’t guarantee there’ll be any clear sky,” Witt said.

There might even be a couple of light showers, Banghoff said.

They were speaking more than four days out from the celestial phenomenon which will see about 91 to 92% coverage in this area as the moon passes between the sun and the earth.

The forecast will be more accurate just a day or two in advance and there is still enough time for some “wobbles,” Banghoff said. If the approaching weather system slows its pace there could be fewer clouds and less chance of precipitation.
