Dover police warn of 'smash and grab' thefts from cars: What to know

DOVER — City police are warning residents about recent "smash and grab" thefts from vehicles by a group that targets credit cards, checks and other forms of identity.

The Dover Police Department announced it is investigating two reports of such thefts Sunday at Longhill Dog Park on Longhill Road.

Victims in both thefts reported stolen wallets containing identification cards, checks, credit and debit cards, and other personal information, police said. A vehicle window was smashed in one incident.

The suspects were driving a dark blue sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, and displaying a vanity plate with some variation of “TR SLAYER” or “T1RESLYR," according police, citing their investigation.

Police said the perpetrators are suspected to be part of "an out-of-state organized crime group that uses stolen personal and banking information to commit financial frauds." The thefts typically occur at gyms, recreation areas, or other locations where citizens will leave their purse or bag in the vehicle for a brief time, police said.

Avoid leaving valuables in sight: Keep valuables such as electronics, purses, wallets, and other items out of plain sight. It’s best to not store these items in your car at all, but if you must leave items in your vehicle, store them in the trunk or glove compartment before arriving at your destination.

Report suspicious activity: If you observe anyone loitering around vehicles, attempting to break in, or engaging in suspicious behavior, report it to the police department immediately. Your prompt action can help prevent thefts andapprehend criminals.
