CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia (WJW) – DoorDash announced Thursday that, for the first time in the U.S., the company is using drones to make short-distance deliveries.

In partnership with Wing Aviation LLC, DoorDash is launching the pilot program in Christiansburg, Virginia, where locals can order food from Wendy’s and have it flown to their doorstep.

The DoorDash app will let customers know if they have an eligible address for a drone delivery. The company says deliveries should take roughly 30 minutes or less.

The program launched in Australia in 2022. According to officials, more than 60 merchants have participated across their three Queensland locations.

“Expanding our partnership with DoorDash and launching in the U.S. is a direct result of the success we’ve seen from our initial collaboration in Australia, where Wing has served tens of thousands of customers via the DoorDash app for over a year now,” Cosimo Leipold, the head of partnerships at Wing, said in a press release.

The drone deliveries will only be available in the Christiansburg area for now, but DoorDash says they plan on expanding to other U.S. cities later this year.
