Door County Sheriff’s Office: 17-year-old arrested for bringing handgun to school

GIBRALTAR, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Door County say one 17-year-old was arrested on Friday after bringing a handgun onto school grounds.

According to a release from the Door County Sheriff’s Office, a Gibraltar School Resource Officer was notified by a staff member that one student may have brought a handgun to school with them.

The resource officer and a school administrator then proceeded to immediately interview the 17-year-old suspect identified by the staff member.

A Ruger .38 Special revolver was said to be recovered from the 17-year-old man who was then arrested and taken to the Door County Justice Center by the Town of Gibraltar Police Department.

Officials say the suspect remains in Door County Jail pending a court appearance on Monday. As of now, the 17-year-old could potentially face a class I felony of knowingly possessing a firearm on school grounds, however, the Door County District Attorney is making a determination as to if this is the appropriate charge and if other charges need to be added.

At this time, an investigation into the incident is ongoing and follow-ups with potential witnesses are being done by the Door County Sheriff’s Office which is working closely with the Gibraltar Area School District.
