Ncuti Gatwa's first season of Doctor Who has received rave critic reviews ahead of its premiere.

With the first two episodes 'Space Babies' and 'The Devil's Chord' set to premiere this Saturday (May 11) on BBC One and iPlayer, the season is currently sitting on an impressive 100% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes following initial reactions.

Critics have praised Gatwa's take on the iconic Time Lord alongside the return of showrunner Russell T Davies to the show, while Coronation Street star Millie Gibson has also been praised for her work as companion Ruby Sunday.

Here's what the reviews have said:

The Guardian

"Gatwa establishes himself as a cracking Doctor immediately. What an obviously perfect piece of casting he is: commandingly hench in his colourful costumes, and naturally able to express the dazzling extremes the Doctor has to embody."

AV Club

"Unlike the Doctors who came before him, Fifteen is also in possession of some much-needed self-awareness: This is a time-traveling alien who’s in tune with his emotions, recognises when he’s afraid or when something’s off."

Radio Times

"In her first outing as a bona-fide Doctor Who companion, Gibson is every bit as watchable – there are shades of Billie Piper's Rose Tyler in Ruby's liveliness and sense of humour, but she absolutely also brings her own idiosyncrasies and no-nonsense Northern attitude to bear, absolutely refusing to play second-fiddle to the swaggering Time Lord."

Variety

"It's Gatwa's star turn that elevates the season. With his megawatt smile and colorful costumes, he dives into the role, delivering a refreshing dynamism that makes the season a uniquely mesmerising watch."

Collider

"Davies' writing makes heroes out of seemingly ordinary people because, in reality, ordinary people become heroes every day. It renders a show as outlandish and fantastical as Doctor Who more grounded in our world."

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
