The Diesel Cruze Hatchback Will Be Available with a Manual in U.S.

From Road & Track

Last night, Chevrolet confirmed that the new Cruze will get a diesel engine option in the States. On both the hatchback and the sedan. Even better, diesel Cruze buyers will have the option to choose a manual or an automatic transmission.

Yes, you read that right. You'll soon be able to purchase a diesel hatchback with a six-speed manual transmission in the U.S. again. And it'll be offered by an American automaker, not a European one. Sadly, it'll still be front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel-drive option was never very likely.

According to Automotive News, you can expect the diesel Cruze to deliver outstanding fuel economy. Paired with the automatic transmission, it could even end up rated as high as 50 mpg on the highway. Even if it misses that target, AutoPacific analyst Dave Sullivan told Automotive News he expects Chevrolet to hit at least 47 mpg highway.

So while the diesel scandal may have stopped Volkswagen from selling any diesels in the U.S. for a while, there's no reason for diesel enthusiasts to despair. The Chevrolet Cruze diesel is coming. As a hatchback with a manual. Rejoice!
