Department of Health informs residents of new guidelines for WIC

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Health (DH), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Nutrition Services (ONS) has updated the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) about its guidelines for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

The new income eligibility guidelines took effect on Monday April 15, 2024 and will help family households of four that make an earning of $57,720 annually to be able to qualify for the WIC program benefits. These adjustments are according to economic inflation.

“Our goal is to provide nutritional services and information that help keep West Virginia families healthy. Currently, West Virginia WIC serves more than 37,000 mothers and young children monthly.  With the expanded income guidelines, we can serve more families,” said Heidi Staats, Director of ONS.

West Virginia WIC caters to 70 percent of babies that are born within the state. Families enrolled in this program get all the benefits they need from nutrition education to prenatal and pediatric health care services. They also receive services that may not be available to them as well.

Eligibility indicates that at least 18,130 residents can qualify for WIC, but have chosen not to yet. Any type of caregiver of a child that is at least five years old should apply to the program.
