Chaplin unseats incumbent Carrier in Dem primary for DuPage recorder; Lukas handily wins Dem primary bid for coroner
DuPage County Recorder Kathleen Carrier lost her bid for a second term in Tuesday night’s Democratic primary election, ousted by DuPage County Board member Elizabeth Chaplin, who now heads to the Nov. 5 general election.
In what was a relatively strong turnout for a relatively lackluster primary with some Congressional and General Assembly seats being challenged but few contested county races, Carrier garnered 30% of the vote to Chaplin’s 50.6% and third candidate Peter “Pete” DiCianni’s 19.3%, according to uncertified election results.
Chaplin, a Downers Grove resident who represents District 2 and has been on the board since 2012, gave up her seat to run for recorder.
In the other countywide primary race for coroner, Judith Lukas easily beat her Democratic foe Jeffrey M. Jacobson. Lukas received 64.95% of the vote to Jacobson’s 35.05%.
In both races, the winner goes on to face a Republican challenger in the general election.
For recorder, that will be Nicole Prater and for coroner, it’s incumbent Coroner Richard Jorgensen.
Results are not considered final because mail-in and provisional ballots still need to be counted. For that reason, the numbers will not be certified for a couple of weeks.
According the DuPage County Clerk’s Office website, primary voter turnout was 19.6% — 121,119 out of 617,363 registered voters casting ballots. According to the breakdown, 23,541 were made at early voting locations, 33,622 were sent in by mail and 63,956 were cast at precinct polling places on Election Day.
Heading into the Nov. 5 election, only incumbent State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and incumbent County Board District 4 candidate Lynn LaPlante, D-Glen Ellyn, do not have challengers.
