DE PERE - Democratic Party of Brown County Chair Christy Welch has entered the race for Wisconsin's 88th Assembly District.

Welch has served as the local Democratic Party chair since January 2023 and has worked as chief business systems officer for FyterTech Nonwovens, according to her LinkedIn.

“Our community deserves leadership that prioritizes public well-being over personal gain, and I am committed to representing the needs of our citizens," Welch said in a press release. "I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work, just as I’ve done my whole career. Together, we can build a more equitable future and open doors to opportunity and prosperity for everyone.”

Assembly District 88 has an open seat since incumbent Rep. John Macco was drawn out of its boundaries during redistricting and announced he plans to retire once his term is up in January.

Under the 2022 legislative maps, it covered the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Bellevue, Ledgeview and Denmark.

An analysis of the maps by Marquette University Lubar Center research fellow John Johnson, found the 88th District under the 2022 maps had a 56% Republican lean and has been held by a Republican since 2011.

With the new maps, the district is slightly less red but still holds a 52% lean toward Republican voters.
