KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City police are investigating a deadly crash Friday morning following a collision between a car and a train where investigators said 39-year-old Richard Buford drove around lowered railroad crossing arms.

The Kansas City Fire Department initially reported that it responded to the crash involving one car just before 8 a.m., and found the scene south of Blue Ridge and Holmes, near Martin City.

Kansas City police released more information about the crash Friday afternoon and said a Union Pacific freight train was headed north while Buford was headed north on Holmes in a blue Jaguar S-type.

The crash report says the Buford ignored warning lights and audible signals, going around the arms, and was struck by the front of the train at the second crossing.

Police said Buford wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. He was the only victim, and the train crew wasn’t hurt.
