CVS Pharmacy closes multiple stores in the OKC area. Did yours make the cut?
CVS Pharmacy continues to close stores, including a half-dozen in Oklahoma City, as part of its three-year strategy of "making health care more affordable, accessible and convenient for consumers."
That's how the Rhode Island-based chain put it when announcing the shuttering of 900 locations in 2021 "to reduce store density and ensure it has the right kinds of stores in the right locations for consumers and for the business." CVS said it would close failing and underperforming brick-and-mortar stores.
CVS said its "digital-forward, technology-first approach" involves "optimizing the retail portfolio to serve as community health destinations," both in person and virtually, by focusing on advanced primary care centers, enhanced HealthHUB locations as well as traditional CVS Pharmacy stores.
New businesses move into spaces CVS Pharmacy has vacated in the OKC area
It's cost the OKC area at least seven CVS stores, but other stores and businesses are moving into those spaces.
Whether to close a particular store comes down to how it fits CVS's new approach, but mainly how good business is at the location, said Will Lightfoot, a partner at SHOP Oklahoma City, who specializes in single-tenant retail leases like CVS utilizes.
He said CVS real estate specialists were probably given a mandate three years ago: "Trim our worst performers."
