CVCAA: City plans to remove ‘Tent City’ homeless camp

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The City of San Angelo is planning to remove the ‘Tent City’ homeless encampment located near 14th Street and 11th Street after multiple businesses and residents in the area raised complaints.

According to the Concho Valley Community Action Agency, the abatement is scheduled for Monday, May 6, at 7 a.m. At that time, City crews and San Angelo Police Department officers will work to remove people from the undeveloped land the camp is on. Afterward, heavy equipment will be used to remove any tents and debris left at the camp.

The agency will have a station near the campsite during the clear-out to help those living at the campsite to make copies of their important documents, which can be stored at West Side Baptist Church.

After the initial abatement, crews will “begin to clear out camps along the river up to Kirby Park” on May 27, according to CVCAA.

In an interview conducted with Jason Priddy, case manager for West Texas Counseling & Guidance, it was stated that the removal effort comes after multiple businesses and residents near the camp raised complaints to the City.

“The City understood that it was there. The problem was that the surrounding areas were complaining about it,” Priddy said. “Once they start complaining about it, the City has to do something about it. It almost became out of the City’s hands to begin with, and then it just escalated. We just weren’t able to get stuff going before it happened.”
