Crash simulation at Centennial High School shows impact on drinking, driving

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A crash simulation took place at Centennial High School on Thursday, April 4, aiming to teach teens the impact of drinking and driving, according to Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS).

LCPS says the “Shattered Lives” simulation involved vehicles, students portrayed as victims and another student acted as the impaired driver.

LCPS says simulation also involved the driver being given a series of field sobriety tests at the scene and was placed under arrest.

Emergency crews and first responders also arrived at the simulation and tended to the victims as if it were an actual crash.

Law enforcement agencies were also present at the simulation and contained the crime scene, investigated the crash and coordinated medical services. Students who were injured were also transported to a local hospital.

“Shattered Lives, formerly known as Every 15 Minutes, is a collaboration of local law enforcement agencies, Las Cruces Public Schools, members of the medical community, the Elks Lodge, Getz Funeral Home and various volunteers from across Doña Ana County. Its mission is to simulate the real-life impacts of drinking and driving before prom, when statistically more underage students are likely to drink alcohol,” LCPS said.
