A car has crashed through the front window of an elderly woman’s home while she was inside.

Images showed a silver Honda hatchback inside the flat on Belmont Road in Twickenham, south-west London.

Emergency services were called to reports of an accident at around 5pm on March 27.

Neighbours said the homeowner had been inside at the time but was in another room, Twickenham Nub News reports.

One told the news site that the driver may have been trying to park before accidentally hitting the accelerator, while another said: “I went outside and it was unbelievable. The car had gone right through into the house. It’s a miracle everyone was OK.”

The flat has been boarded up and cordoned off with hazard tape. A low brick wall was also destroyed in the crash.

Jeremy Vine, the BBC presenter, posted two pictures of the car inside the house on social media following the crash.

He wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “This happened a few miles from my house last week, and it’s not even been on the local news.”

Vine, a cycling crusader who frequently posts videos of his daily London commute, added: “Imagine if a bicycle did this. There would be questions in Parliament, calls for a new law to restrict bicycle speeds, prosecution and jailing of the rider and demands for a curfew on cycling.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called to Belmont Road, Twickenham, at about 18:03hrs on March 27  following reports that a car had collided with a house. Officers attended. No one was injured.”
